This is the last bigger picture I've been working on in the past weeks. No, actually it was pretty much finished two weeks ago, but I decided to let it rest for a while to see if I could find anything to improve. I didn't (or, more acurately, I was too lazy to look), an have therefore labelled it 'finished'.

Description:
It's a piece of fan art dedicated to the great game of Homeworld and the people who made it. I love the designs of that game, I love the environments and I love the mood in the game.
What you can see on the painting is a Kushan Assault Frigate (the big thing to the left), another of the same kind (to the right), an Ion Cannon Frigate (top), a destroyer (top right), a carrier (bottom) and asteroids (everywhere). All ships are paintovers based on several screenshots from the game (I had to cheat because I have much yet to learn about perspective) but with higher detail and partially based on HW concept art.

Tools:
Photoshop 7.0, Wacom Graphire 3.

Time:
No clue. Countless hours, coming in 5-10 hour clusters spread across three months.

Comments:
Note to self: less purple next time. Oh, but I am pretty pleased with the result, considering I have much more skills in rendering organic shapes than blocky metal warships hanging in space.
Finally, thanks to the frequenters of the Relicnews forums who kept me going and provided me with both compliments and critique.

This is a spectacular piece! I'm loving the setting, the detail and the perspective in this image. I'll be honest, I prefer the Kushan ships is every way to the Taiidan ships. That slightly blocky, militaristic appearance, weapon placement on the Capital Ships, the Drone Frigate and Cloak Fighter. I never saw a practical use for the Defense Fighter and Defense Field Frigates - they can't fight back and will be taken out fairly quickly with Ion Cannons.

Also, the purple helps with setting the atmosphere. It makes it look just that little bit eerie...er? And space-y. And I also am reminded of Diamond Shoals. I hated that level. I've been crushed by the Taiidan after a botched assault and now I have to blast asteroid after asteroid for half an hour. That's what it felt like, anyway.

Mission 06 - Diamond Shoals... with black holes!

By paintover, did you mean screenshot and redraw each ship entirely from scratch?

I always preferred the Taiidan ships, if I do say so myself, but great painting. :)

Since it has been approximately for-freaking-ever since I last talked to you in any way, how are you?

Taiidan do have all the best designs, but Kushan frigates deserved some love too! :D

I'm well, life is quiet but unproblematic. Dividing my time between work and the webcomic I'm collaborating on with SquidDNA from the RN forums, where I've hung up my mod hat and gone lurking.

And how are you these days?
